While we only spent a couple of days in Hong Kong last month, we did get to experience a lot. Here are 4 tips for Hong Kong travel, to help make your experience more enjoyable. If you’re planning an upcoming trip, you’re sure to have a lot of fun.
Rent an Octopus Card
What is an octopus card? It’s an electronic payment method that enables you to use public transportation more easily. You can rent a card with pre-loaded amounts and can continue to add funds as needed. We used our octopus cards to make subway travel a breeze. Some stores and restaurants will even allow you to pay with your octopus card.
We were in Hong Kong for three days and we each chose to load $150 Hong Kong dollars (about $19 USD each) on our cards. This included a deposit of $50 Hong Kong dollars each to rent the card. Since it’s a deposit, you get that money back when you return the card.
Take the Airport Express Subway
Chances are, you will need to get back to the airport at the end of your travel. In Hong Kong, getting to the airport was one of our easiest experiences yet. We took our hotel’s free shuttle to the Hong Kong station and from there we each bought a one-way ticket, which cost 100 Hong Kong dollars each (about $13 USD).
We were seated in comfortable seats and arrived at the airport 20 minutes later! We highly recommend using this service, so you that you won’t have to worry about waiting in traffic!
Stay at a Hotel that Offers the Handy Smartphone Service
One of the many reasons we chose our hotel was the fact that it offered the use of a free smartphone during our stay! We were able to take the phone with us outside of the hotel so that we could look up directions, make calls, or research any information that we might have needed. The smartphone service they used is called Handy. We noticed other tourists also had these phones.
This is a great savings because you won’t have to worry about adding more data to your phone plan or stressing out about overage charges. Research local hotels before booking to see if they have this type of service.
Pack Napkins and Tissues
When visiting Hong Kong, it’s a good idea to pack some napkins and tissues. Many restaurants (even nicer ones) have no napkins available. We carried small packs around each time we left our hotel. It’s best to be prepared, so you don’t find yourself having to eat a whole meal without napkins.
We also read that some bathrooms don’t have toilet paper (which seems to be a common issue throughout Asia). We didn’t have issues with toilet paper, but we did carry around some tissues in case we encountered this type of situation.
If you’re thinking about visiting Hong Kong for the first time, you will be able to enjoy many experiences. These 4 tips for Hong Kong travel can ensure that you have an even better time.
