If you have yet to visit Japan, I recommend that you add this amazing destination to your list. I recently returned for my second visit to Japan — this time to explore a different city — Fukuoka. There’s so many great things to do in Fukuoka! If you’re thinking about visiting this wonderful small city, keep reading to learn about some of the best things to do in Fukuoka!
Relax in Ohori Park
I was lucky enough to be staying in an Airbnb that was only a short walk away from Ohori Park. Unfortunately, it was a rainy and very cloudy day — but I still enjoyed my time here! This park area is very peaceful and relaxing. There are benches to sit down and take in the view and there are a couple of cafes and restaurants nearby. If I ever return to Fukuoka, I would love to have a picnic lunch at Ohori Park!
Visit Canal City Hakata
If you’re looking for a great way to spend the afternoon, head over to the Canal City Hakata. As the name suggests, this shopping and dining area is located in the Hakata area. You can check out the shops, watch a movie, play games at the arcade, and even try various ramen dishes at Raumen Stadium! A canal runs throughout the complex — which is pretty cool to see!
Eat Lots of Delicious Food!
When I’m in Japan, I love trying new foods. There are many delicious restaurants throughout Fukuoka. Hakata style ramen is very popular here. This kind of ramen is made with tonkatsu or pork! I was able to sample two hakata style ramens on my short visit. Fukuoka also has a lot of great street food. Visit the yatai or street food carts to check out some of the local snacks — there is an area near across the water from Canal City Hakata where many yatai are set up.
Visit the Fukuoka Castle
Another one of the top things to do in Fukuoka is visit the Fukuoka Castle. You’ll see the remains of the castle, but you’ll also have a chance to explore the surrounding Maizuru Park. You get a great view of Fukuoka in this area. If you’re nearby, I recommend a visit here.
What looks like a normal office building on one side is also a green park on the other side! At the ACROS Fukuoka building, you can climb your ways to the top garden area. This building looks really cool! You’ll have to climb many steps to get to the top — but you’ll be taking in a bit of nature every step of the way. At the very top, you can see the views of the city.
Go Shopping in Tenjin
Are you in the mood to buy some new clothes or unique gift items? Why not head to Tenjin? This is an underground shopping district where you could easily spend hours looking at shops. If you’re looking to take a break, there are lots of restaurants and snack shops along the way.
Visit the Local Temples and Shrines
I don’t know about you, but I enjoy exploring local temples and shrines. You will find several temples and shrines throughout Fukuoka. At the Sumiyoshi Shrine, it’s said that if you touch the hands of the sumo statue, that you’ll gain strength.
Enjoy the Beauty at Yusentei Park
When I visit Japan, I love spending time at parks and gardens. My favorite garden area in Fukuoka is Yusentei Park. You will walk through many beautiful areas and will see beautiful flowers and trees, a waterfall, and pond areas. If you want to relax and enjoy nature — this is the place to visit.
As you can see, there’s a lot of things to do in Fukuoka. No matter what you decide to do while visiting Fukuoka, you’re sure to have a memorable time! As always, thanks for stopping by.
