We recently spent a long weekend in Hanoi, and loved our time there! There are many things to see and do in Hanoi, no matter what your interests are. Take a look below to learn more about some of the activities that you can enjoy while in Hanoi. After a trip here, you may just find that you want to visit again!
See a Water Puppet Show
If you’re looking to experience some of the local culture and enjoy seeing unique performances, you must see a water puppet show! Here, you will see colorful and creative puppets dancing in water! You will also be able to enjoy live music and singing during the performance.
While the show will be in Vietnamese, you can still get a feel for what the story is about just by watching the puppets dance and interact with one another. It’s a fun and interesting activity that’s great for both children and adults.
Explore the Streets of the Old Quarter
While in Hanoi, it’s recommended that you spend some of your time in the Old Quarter. Here you will find coffee shops and cafes, street food vendors, fresh fruit stands, and you can enjoy all of the hustle and bustle that comes along with being in Hanoi.
It can be a fun experience just cruising down the streets as you take in the sight and sounds. When walking, be careful of all of the motorbike traffic!
Enjoy a Local Brew
During the evenings and night-time, the streets of Hanoi get a bit louder as everyone comes out to have drinks and socialize. If you’re looking to experience the feeling of drinking with the locals, visit the beer alleys in Hanoi.
Here, you will be able to try the famous bia hoi beer. This beer is homemade and brewed daily, so it’s only fresh for a few hours. At only 20 cents a glass, you can easily enjoy several glasses as you interact with locals and other travelers.
Take a Street Food Tour
Do you love trying new food? In Hanoi, you can enjoy an educational street food tour. This is a great way to try the best local street food! You can do your tour by motorbike or you can do a walking tour. You can also meet and interact with other tourists while on your adventure.
Visit the Hoa Lo Prison
If you’re interested in history, you’ll enjoy spending some time at the Hoa Lo Prison. This is where many political protestors were held during the French era. Later, during the 1960’s, American soldiers were held here during the Vietnam War. John McCain is one of the most famous prisoners of war who was held at the Hoa Lo Prison.
You can explore the prison, read about the history, and take a look at many artifacts. This is a very interesting and educational attraction.
Get a Massage
If you’re looking to relax and unwind with a massage, Hanoi is a great place to do just that. There are many spas throughout the area. You can enjoy a back, full body, or foot massage, or can enjoy other spa services. We stayed at the Hanoi La Siesta Hotel and Spa and both enjoyed a massage there.
Try the Famous Egg Coffee
If you enjoy coffee and like spending time at cafes, you should give the famous Vietnamese egg coffee a try! Egg coffee is exactly as it sounds – hot coffee mixed with egg and sugar. This drink makes a great after dinner dessert, as it’s very sweet and rich in flavor.
Take a Cooking Class
Do you love Vietnamese food? What better way to explore this cuisine than by learning to make it yourself! Throughout Hanoi, you will find many cooking class programs. This can be a fun activity to do as a couple or family. You’ll learn to use new ingredients and will be able to enjoy your own creations!
No matter what you choose to see and do in do in Hanoi, there’s a lot of fun to be had!
