As it’s nearing the very end of 2017, I’ve been thinking a lot about the great flight deals I booked last year. These deals allowed me to explore some really amazing destinations. In 2017, I mostly let flight deals decide where I was headed. I’m always willing to spend more on comfy accommodation and great food, but I do try to get a great price on airfare. Here’s a look at my best flight deals of 2017— I’ll share with you how you can save big, too!
Where did I go in 2017?
Here’s a look at the places I visited in 2017:
- Washington, DC
- Barcelona, Spain
- San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
- Santiago, Chile
- Denver, Colorado
- Boulder, Colorado
- Orlando, Florida
- Naples, Florida
- Chicago, Illinois
- Athens, Greece
- Santorini, Greece
Spain, Chile, and Greece were completely new countries for me. I have airline deals to thank for that!
What Were My Best Deals?
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked about airline deals. I think I get asked about it most when I’m waiting for my flights at the airport and I get asked about where I’m headed and why! Well, now I will share with you how you too can save big! 🙂
|Leaving From||Destination||Total Roundtrip Price|
|Pittsburgh, PA||Denver, CO||$96.40|
|Washington, DC||Santiago, Chile||$220.66|
|New York, NY (JFK)||Barcelona, Spain||$434.02|
|Newark, NJ||Athens, Greece||$488.66|
Be Flexible with Travel Dates
So, how can you save big on flights? There are many ways! First, I suggest flexibility. I know this can be rather difficult if you have a traditional 9-5 job and a family. For freelancers or those with flexible vacation benefits, it’s a bit easier to change your travel dates around. This opens up the door to more deals.
Know Where to Look for Travel Deals
Next, you’ll want to be well aware of the best travel deal websites. Here are some of my favorite websites:
If you use social media on a regular basis, your best bet is to follow the above pages and accounts. These companies frequently post deals throughout the day. Some deals go super fast, so it’s best to grab one while you can (especially if you are flexible with when you can travel)!
Be Willing to Visit New Places
Are you open to visiting new places? This is a great way to save. A lot of deals are available all over the world, so if you decide to take a vacation and are open to any place, rather than one set destination, you’ll be able to save a lot more money. You can also use your destination flexibility to your advantage.
With tools like Skyscanner, you can fully open up your search options by searching for your departure city and then choosing “Everywhere” as your destination. This allows you to see the best deals all over the world. You can choose set dates, set months, or look at the cheapest upcoming months.
Here’s a look at what the search results look like for “Everywhere.” You can click on each individual country to see each city/town and price to learn more:
Consider Budget Airlines
Maybe you’ve heard some horror stories or maybe you just imagine budget airlines as not being the best fit for you. Most of the time, budget airlines are just fine and they’re a great way to save. If you’re only traveling a few hours away or want to go out of town for a last-minute weekend getaway, I dare you to try a budget airline.
This can save you a lot of money on your ticket price. Just be sure to read up on ticket terms and baggage allowances ahead of time to avoid surprises. If I’m only traveling for a weekend or a week, I will usually consider a budget airline. Most budget airlines like Spirit and Frontier, for example, only allow for a small backpack in the included ticket price. This works for me for some trips, because I’m either visiting for only a couple of days or plan to have access to a washer and dryer during my trip. Who wants to carry around a bunch of extra bags anyway?
Check out some of these examples of one-way flight deals through Frontier Airlines:
Now you know how I’m able to get the best flight deals for my adventures! Be flexible with travel dates, know where to find the best deals, be open to visiting new destinations, and consider budget airlines if you want to save more on flights this upcoming year! This can help you keep more money in your pocket while seeing some pretty amazing places.
I’m so excited for what 2018 has in store! I wonder where travel deals will take me next! 🙂
